Abstract

Amino acids, carbohydrates or vitamins were.added, respectively, into nutrient broth in which Salmonella typhi(I-1901) and Escherichia coli 0135 (0135) were inoculated, and growth response of 11901 to individual additives were studied.
In mixed cultures, 0135 inhibited the growth of H901. The recovery of 1-1~01 was somewhat increased by cystine and methionine. Tryptophan had no effect on growth of 11901. However, h istidine and glutamic acid were inhibitory.
Glucose and inositol increased the recovery of H901 at 5, 10, and 15 hr. after incubation,-whereas at 25 hr. the recovery of H901 was decreased to some extent. Lactose, mannose, ind PABA was inhibitory.
Culture filtrates of 0135 inhibited the growth of 11901 and boiled filtrates for 30 min. almost restored the capacity of filtrates to support growth of 11901, indicating the presence of a, heat-labile inhibitor.
